Sounds like we are in for a very thought-inspiring month! Listening to your review brought to mind two books in particular, One More Border and So Far From the Sea. I find both these books to create greas spaces for taking up issues of peace and conflict.

Thanks for reviewing these books even if they are sometimes emotionally difficult to talk about. It’s what makes the reviews more inviting though…to see you personally invested :-)

I’m glad you liked the booklist idea. I think it would be terrific to take to bookstores and libraries not only for the purpose of buying or borrowing books but also for suggesting titles to bookstores and libraries.

Looking forward to the next review.

This is my first time here (from Semicolon). What a great podcast. Are you familiar with the new children’s blogger book awards, the Cybils? Check out the link. I’m sure you could come up with some great nominees.

In this vein of war, my daughter was recently impressed with Tomie de Paola’s I’m Still Scared. It’s a biographical series about the World War II. She’s just read that one, but there are one or two more that we’ve been looking for.

Thank you for listening and for the Tomie de Paola series suggestion. I will definitely try to track it down — we love Tomie de Paola and have one of his books queued up for release in November.

I’m on the picture book nominating committee for The Cybils so right now I’m busy getting to know the 2006 nominated books (I’m always a year behind because I don’t buy hardcover books).

In the midst of a war that fewer and fewer Americans support, this book is a great, timely resource. A number of my students have parents, siblings, other relatives in Iraq, so this is a subject that comes up in different ways during our Morning Meetings. I share your sense that war and its surrounding issues are ones that should be addressed with young students. But I also feel strongly that these are issues that have a huge impact on children, both those who have a direct connection to war but those who do not. This book, with its small moments, appears to be a powerful book that will allow children to really put their arms around the stories and their messages. That these are stories that really happened will offer young readers the opportunity to really connect. Could you please tell me where I might be able to buy this book - I cannot find it for sale anywhere on the web. Thank you.

I have a Current Events wall in my 2nd grade classroom. The students are asked to read the newspaper and find something interesting and write about it. I was thinking that they’d spend the most time looking at the Sports and Kids Post sections but I was mistaken. I have had many conversations about war and I find it difficult to explain in words that they can understand. It is clear that the current war is having a direct impact on my classroom, and this book sounds like the perfect bridge to help them begin to understand the meaning of war in a tangible way. They know a lot of information from their families and what they hear on T.V. but they don’t grasp the concept of war. We’ve studied several (American Revolution, War of 1812, the Civil War) but hearing what other children think of war is a great starting place for them to understand today’s world. This book would make a valuable contribution to our daily discussions. Thanks for sharing it.
