Vivian:

Thanks for the comment, and the idea. We’re ahead of you on the bookmarks, though. We had Nico design the bookmarks for us in the summer (but they wouldn’t have been ready for Podcamp Boston so we did cards instead). We’ll be sending them for printing once our supply of business cards dries up.

We’ll be sure to mail you some when we get them printed!

Yay! Now I can take the list to my two favorite book sources, our public library and Amazon.com. ;) What a great idea. Thanks guys! Charles

Charles,

Thanks! We’re glad the list is going to go to good use. Isn’t Vivian a genius??

By the way, we’re looking for some snazzy software that would allow you to CLICK to the featured book’s entry in the catalogue of your local library (so that each featured book would have “Chapters”, “Amazon”, & “Your Local Libary” buttons).

So, if you’re ever in geek circles, keep your eyes open for a genius that is interested in doing that for us. Imagine that! ‘Click’ & your book is reserved at your local library! This wonderful suggestion comes from Todd of “Quirky Nomads”.

Thanks for listening, Charles.

That is a fantastic idea! Another idea I’ve been mulling over is to have the capability to be able to send info on particular books to libraries for inclusion in their collections. This could be public libraries as well as libraries in elementary school and universities. So for instance if I think Poodlena is a must have book for the public library in my community it would be terrific to have some capability built in to JOMB so that I could click somewhere to fill out an e-mail address to forward the info to my local library or…

See…this is not well-formulated yet…which is why it is in the mulling over folder in my head…but doesn’t hurt to toss it out there…

Vivian,

*Another* great idea! Now we just need to find the genius who can build it for us!

You know, about the bookmarks idea. While having them printed up for distribution at meet-ups is a great idea, you could also just post the designs as a PDF, similar to the book list, and let people print them themselves.

Also, another thought: if you updated the bookmark every so often with the latest batch of books, then when folks head off to the library, they can bring their bookmarks with them in their return books.

I’m sure that many of us would have no problem printing up extra bookmarks and ‘accidentally leaving’ them inside books that are being returned.

Thanks for all,

Vivian’s idea would be easier to accomplish, all you would need to do is send an automatic email to your library of choice. The user would input the email address and hopefully the library staff would be willing to honor the email instead of trash, or ignore it. That idea would only take a few lines of code on a web form.
The other idea, click to automatically reserve a book, is SO COOL, but would require libraries to use the same software system or compatible systems otherwise you would have a different button for each system. Just my thoughts. Charles

This may be an idea that will save libraries. Unfortunately libraries are so behind the times, technically and conceptually. Not enough money and not enough people who care about them.

Charles,

Here is what Todd, who originated the idea, had to say about the possibility:

“It’s a shame that someone hasn’t set up an elegant way to create “affiliate links” to libraries. The technology is there – sites like libraryelf.com, for example, can interface nicely into one’s library account to remind you by email of overdues. You’d think it would be just another step to create a generic link structure so that you could include a link to each book in your show notes that would be translated by an intermediate site into a link to the book’s page on the user’s local library. In the meantime, I guess it will have to be a multi-step process.”

Does anyone have friends at LibaryElf.com ??

I talked with LibraryElf, did you know there is a book with a similar title? It’s called the Shelf Elf and I think of it every time I visit Library Elf. Anyway, I talked with them and if your library is not on there system you can add it yourself! This is very cool! Now if they will create a web button for people to add their own websites we all be set! ;)

Hey!

I have another great idea. We should give up all this audio stuff and make JOMB a pdf-cast. This is more feedback than we’ve ever had on a JOMB episode!!!

And of course, now that I’ve re-read the thread, I see that Charles’ comment is almost 100% likely to be comparing the “emailed form” idea with the “click the button to reserve” idea, and my humble little bookmarks idea probably has nothing to do with the conversation at all.

So, please allow me to fix this by grabbing my white out…

this is gone…

OK…

Now this…

all right…

and now, I’ll just go sit over here and read my copy of Dr. Xargle’s Commentary on Earthmobiles, and try to stay out of everyone else’s way.

Chris,

We *love* having you in our way! Please send us your thoughts any time you feel the urge!

It gets very lonely when the conversation is all on our end.
