The economics of his first book experience had him doubting if being a children’s book illustrator was a viable career. We’ll spoil the story for you; it all works out. He continues to illustrate, and we get to enjoy books like The Araboolies of Liberty Street, Pumpkins: A Story for a Field, By My Brother’s Side and The Birthday Tree.

On this edition of Just One More Book!!, illustrator Barry Root talks about his relative anonymity on the web (his own website will be available soon), the time investment for illustrating books and turning down work.

What a great interview guys! I knew exactly what Barry was speaking to, in regards to the “discovery” of using the computer and a wide format printer to capture the spontinaity of that original sketch. I’ve been doing that for years and it has revolutionized illustration for many artists. Almost always, that first rough is your best and there is something that is lost in trying to transfer it to the watercolour paper in the old ways.
Wish though I could have my computer in another room besides my studio, like Barry. Sadly, I would DIE without it being in here with me, I wouldn’t be listening to this interview for example… I’d be working instead, haha.
I’m looking forward to his website, 54 is no excuse Barry:)
Cheers,
Chris (who is ….53…. shudder:)
