I have another suggestion for the "not cookie cutter" theme that promotes understanding that just because we're non-traditional we're still great. "Runt Farm: Under New Management" by Amanda Lorenzo celebrates diversity with a cast of non-related animals of different specials who nonetheless form a family and make an abandoned farm a real home. The book celebrates intelligence, with smart characters not afraid to use their brains, and text that invites kids to use weird and wonderful words (something my kids continue to do even as they have way moved past kids' books).

It's a great addition to the books listed here (which I have to say, even though my kids are older now, I have to go take a look at. These look great).

Hey, this is neat. A lot of people are uncomfortable with literary criticism for children's books, but I love it. This is great!
