Interview with Andrea Beaty

Monday, April 21, 2008.

Andrea BeatyIt can be easy to overlook how much enjoyment a young bear and an obsessive student can derive from life. That’s probably why we invented picture books and creative writers.

On this edition of Just One More Book!!, Mark speaks with author Andrea Beaty (Andrea Beaty’s blog), who’s book Iggy Peck, Architect was one of Time Magazine’s top 10 children’s books of 2007, about writing light picture books and a deep young reader novel, working with different illustrators and not preaching to readers.

Neither glares nor germs nor a principal’s rage can squelch the earnest examinations and ridiculous remedies of a well meaning young bear in this cheekily illustrated school yard lark.

Our feeble attempt at a Desert Island 10

Friday, December 21, 2007.

Andrea and Mark at the Kidlit ConferenceYou’d think it would be easy to pick favourite children’s books. Indeed, that’s what Mark thought.

As it turns out, there are far too many amazing children’s books, authors and illustrators to limit ourselves to just ten choices. Even so, Mark suggested we try compiling our Desert Island 10 — books we’d need to have with us if we were stranded on a desert island.

The list that follows captures the names of books, book series and authors mentioned.

Are you brave or crazy enough to create your own Desert Island 10? Share your list as a comment on this post, send your MP3 recorded or type-written list via email to justonemorebook@gmail.com, or phone it in to our listener feedback line (206-350-6487).

* Congratulations to Andrea Beaty. Her book, Iggy Peck, Architect, is one of Time Magazine’s top ten children’s books of 2007!

Uncommonly crisp, comical illustrations combine with flippant, rhyming text to chronicle the irrepressible ingenuity of an audacious seven year old — and to remind us to make space for what makes people tick.
